When the Pearse family in Berkeley Springs decided it was time to update their master bathroom, they envisioned more than just a refresh. They wanted a space that felt spacious, functional, and refined while also improving the flow between their bedroom and bathroom areas. With thoughtful planning and careful craftsmanship, the Mountaineer Kitchens & Baths team helped transform their space into a beautiful and highly functional retreat.

This renovation included significant structural adjustments, custom cabinetry, and carefully selected finishes that work together to create a cohesive and comfortable master suite.

Reimagining the Layout for a More Functional Space

A major part of this renovation involved reworking the layout to better utilize the existing space. The project began with the removal of the existing tub, vanity, flooring, trim, and lighting fixtures in the master bathroom and portions of the bedroom. An existing hallway powder room was eliminated, and a master bedroom closet was removed to make room for new built-in cabinetry and storage.

Our team then framed new bathroom walls according to the design plan, helping create a more efficient layout while maintaining a clean transition between the bedroom and bathroom areas. A new 48-inch barn door was installed at the master bath entrance, adding both character and practicality while maximizing usable space.

Custom Cabinetry and Built-In Storage

Custom storage solutions played an important role in this renovation. The Pearse family selected KraftMaid cabinetry, known for its durability and customization options.

Highlights of the cabinetry installation included:

  • A 72-inch double vanity featuring all-plywood construction and soft-close hardware
  • Hickory cabinetry with a Barley finish for warmth and texture
  • A quartz vanity top with double undermount sinks in Emerstone Firenze
  • Custom built-ins installed in the former master closet area
  • Additional built-in cabinetry designed to discreetly conceal a safe within the closet space

These built-ins not only improved storage but also helped create an organized look throughout the master suite.

A Spacious and Modern Shower Design

The new shower became a standout feature of the Pearse family’s bathroom. The team installed an Onyx Collection shower system in the color Coastal, complete with a built-in bench and two recessed Liberty niches for convenient storage.

Additional features included:

  • A linear drain for a clean, modern appearance
  • Carefully sealed panels and joints to ensure long-term durability
  • A design that balances comfort with easy maintenance

The Onyx shower system provides a sleek, durable alternative to traditional tile while maintaining a refined appearance.

Flooring, Lighting, and Finishing Details

To complete the space, new flooring and lighting were installed throughout both the bathroom and bedroom areas.

Flooring upgrades included:

  • Click-lock luxury vinyl plank flooring in the master bathroom
  • Mannington laminate flooring installed in the master bedroom and closets

Lighting improvements helped brighten the entire space and included:

  • Seven recessed lights installed throughout the bathroom and bedroom
  • Two fan/light combo units for ventilation and comfort
  • Lighted mirrors at the vanity
  • Electrical outlets and connections for a new electric fireplace and television within the bedroom built-ins

Additional details added warmth and personality to the space, including board-and-batten trim in the toilet room and bathroom areas, custom wallpaper installed by the homeowner on the vanity wall and toilet closet, and freshly painted walls, ceilings, and trim throughout the suite.
